Through our ambitious curriculum, we aim for children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. All pupils should be able to use spoken and written language with confidence and clarity to explain and justify mathematical reasoning and have a deep conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts and be flexible and resourceful problem solvers.

We use White Rose as a basis for our maths curriculum. Our curriculum focuses on a mastery approach to maths to ensure that children deepen their knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts. This is so children have a solid foundation and understanding of more basic concepts to enable them to develop their learning and able to move on to more advanced concepts during their maths journey at St Charles’. By using this mastery approach, our children will benefit from an improved learning retention and they will develop mathematical understanding, reasoning and problem-solving abilities that will stay with them even after they have left St Charles’.

Our curriculum is designed so all learner’s can achieve. The ‘5 a day approach’ and Rosenshine principles are used when planning and teaching maths across school. We use flexible grouping within our lessons. At the planning stage, teachers consider what scaffolding may be required for children who may struggle to understand certain concepts in the lesson and suitable ‘rich tasks’ for those who may grasp the concepts more rapidly. Reception and KS1 take part in the Mastering Number programme. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future. 

Below is an outline of the maths long term plan for each year group.
