We started our STEAM week by getting involved in an assembly to, figure out what our challenge for the week was. There were some pesky culprits and we didn't know who committed the crime (stealing the crown Jewels.)
Our first challenge was to design an avatar to to protect our crown Jewels. N stated, " We used a design software called 'Computer Aided Design' (CAD)." Year 4 made some great shapes!
Year 4 designed our safes and what materials we would use. We knew it had to be safe, secure and lightweight in order for the Queen to transport it.
Whilst making our safe, we used cardboard to create a cube shape and added features such as: a combination lock, electrical circuit, felt inside and cool designs.
Thursday was all about creating a Dragons Den pitch. Together we decided to use role play to engage our dragons and even a crimp (type of rap) to impress the judges. Woah stylish...Woah Cardboard Box.
Unfortunately, poor Mr Bastow got dunked, he thinks the points should be recounted. Year 4 however seemed very happy about this *sad face.
Overall, Year 4 had an amazing week and there are some real engineers in our school.

Year 4 have been working hard this week, getting ready for their 'Hour of Prayer'. We have been invited by Father Jonathon to attend the '40 hours of devotion'. We will be doing this with Year 1. Singing hymns and reading prayers. Year 4 have been working together to make this a special day!
I would like to say congratulations to all who received their First Holy Communion, the children did a great job on the day. Thank you to all the parents who attended and I really loved the party after. The lemon drizzle was a winner for me.
Mr Bastow.
09.06.22
It was all about 'Mission Day' this week! Year 4 did a fantastic job; working on the mission statement, testing themselves on 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire', producing fantastic 'Spiritual Art' and performing our poetry in assembly.
We have also been voting on a school song, we're waiting nervously for the results!
Mr Bastow.
27.05.22
You won't believe what we have accomplished this week! Year 4 have made viking jewellery out of clay, we have created a balanced argument in English and on Thursday we were lucky enough to have an 'Afternoon tea' outside.
With regards to our Viking jewellery, we looked at norse animals, including: serpents, wolves, rams and different patterns. M explained " I loved sculpting and painting the clay!"
A told everyone "I adored experimenting with the patterns and colours."
Throughout the week we have enjoyed practising our songs and we can't wait for the music to hit your ears! Enjoy your half term!
Mr Bastow (Typed by Mr Bastow and created by Year 4).

This week has been a great week, we've been busy exploring our local area and even had a visit from a 'real life' author and illustrator.
Year 4 spent the morning travelling on the Metro into Central Newcastle, exploring the Quayside, asking questions to the general public and learnt about the changes on the Quay. L "I had so much fun and even got to go across the Millennium Bridge".
K " A couple said that in the olden times, there was no fish and it was much smokier. This happened because there were too many chemicals and oil from the ships."
I "The depth of the water is 13 meters deep."
Liz Million is a funny author with lots of humor. She came to our school and taught us how to draw like a real illustrator. Liz was amazing at putting on funny impressions and even did a funny witch impression about Mrs Kelly (cackle).
I know how to show I am sorry, have a great week and stay safe (Statement to Live By)

Back to the 5 day weeks!
There has definitley been some tired eyes this week as the class have been pushing themselves! In computing children were able to complete their presentations on a topic that would be taught to Year 2's. Some went mathematically and some went for Electricity. This allowed Year 4 to practise their presenting skills as they had to stand up at the front and try and be the teacher. Looks like we a have a few future teachers in our class.
Mr Bastow
06.05.22
We are taking part in Teamwork Games this term. This improves our fundamental skills in PE, but also (crucially) how to work well as a team and develop core values which are key in being successful in sport: teamwork, honesty, respect, communication, and many more! Year have been creating their own games with rules as well as, taking part in different games.
29.04.22
Back to business
Year 4 finally completed their writing on the 'Spiderwick Chronicles' and they were definitely gripped by this. Some even watched the film as home as they couldn't handle the suspense anymore! We were able to create an alternative event in the story and create a suspenseful atmosphere, which was great to read.
08.04.22
Resilience is what Year 4 were focusing on this week. Luckily, we had our adventure day where the big focus was on teamwork. This was great for year 4 to experience as they were able to set up tents, have a go at a commando assault course and crack codes to rescue a survivor.
Keep going Year 4
Mr Bastow.
28.03.22
Unsurprisingly, it's been a busy week for Year 4 this week! We have been so engaged with our lessons. Due to the weather being nice, we were able to go outside and complete our maths lesson. This involved during data on to a line graph and making estimations.
In English we had a go at being an entrepreneur on 'Dragons Den' (Obviously Mr Bastow was the Dragon). The children had to convince me to read on in their writing. Some pitches were humorous and some crunched the numbers on the investments they wanted. Some also used the 'wall' for inspiration.
In Geography we created the process of a 'Stack' forming using playdough to get that concrete understanding. We all enjoyed our 'CAFOD Walk' children made an excellent effort getting round in the hot weather.
This week has been the start of our explanation writing in English, which has captured the class' attention. We are linking this to our science topic ‘Animals including Humans’. We will be explaining to the reader all about the digestive system and how it works.
In PE, we have been improving on our grip in Tennis and trying to keep a rally with our forehand. We will study the rules and scoring system later on. DT is going to be super exciting as we are going to start designing our loaf and having our own version of the ‘Great British Bake Off’.
Keep going Year 4!
Mr Bastow
17.03.22
Our Class Mass
This week the children were able to complete their topic, 'The Eucharist'. This was completely child led where the children came up with all the ideas. We had prayers read, stories from the bible re-told, hymns and allowing ourselves to receive Jesus.
I have been so impressed with the children all the way through this topic and we have explored our faith in a deeper way.
Mr Bastow
10.03.22
We've had lots of visitors this week. This started off with Father Jonathan leading our 'Holy Communion' session where the children learned about 'The Last Supper'. They also practised how to receive Jesus' body.
In Science it got messy learning about the digestive system where children were able to physically see how our food is digested. In Music we continued to form our band and children focused on timing. Finally, this was our first football session which went really well and all worked on the key skills including, passing and moving, dribbling, tackling and protecting the ball.
WORLD BOOK DAY 2022! This is a day I'm sure all the children have loved (Mr Bastow a little too much). Everyone's outfits were fantastic! During the day we focused on a class text called 'The Invisible' which was based around a girl who was invisible to everyone. Year 4 predicted what they thought the book was going to be about. We completed a diary entry as if we were the girl and created a finished piece of artwork that looks amazing. Well done Year 4!
Samba Drumming has also started where the children work as a team to play instruments, work with the drums, different sounds and equipment. This is all about a 'Growth Mindset' as children may not pick this up straight away, keep going Year 4! First week back completed!
This week marked our time celebrating Mental health week and Internet Safety. We completed fun and informational lessons on internet safety and how to be safe online and playing games.
For Mental Health week we were wowed by Year 4 and them dressing to express. Unfortunately, Mr Bastow let the team down and lost the 3 legged race against Mrs Nealings #fix. We got involved in a catwalk, poetry writing, math's games, Kahoot quizzes and extra playtime. I hope everyone got something from this day and has a relaxing weekend.
January has been completed! Year 4 have really wowed me this week even with only 17 in. Thank you to everyone that has been completing the home learning which was to a very high standard.
In History we were able to complete out Kahoot Quiz which is a way children can independently answer a quiz on the I-pads. This was lots of fun but also very inciteful to find out what the children already knew.
In PE we have worked on our skills in dance and skipping. We have needed some resilience for this, if you have a skipping rope at home see if you can practice some of the jumps as this will help our PE lesson :)
Another good week,
Mr Bastow :)
24.01.22
It was a great first week back for myself and the children were very welcoming and happy to see me. Thank you for your kind messages from my arrival. The children have enjoyed starting their new English topic on newspaper articles and recounting a battle from Ancient Greece.
In Math's the children persevered with decimals and have been able to compare, order and round. We have completed this in a practical way and worked hard on our problem and reasoning!
Thanks for a great first week back,
Mr Bastow.
16.12.21
This week has been fantastic! Year 4 have been getting ready for Christmas including, our 'Christmas Jumper Day', Christmas Lunch and Christmas party day! We have been working on Calendars, Christmas Cards and solving mathematical problems.
Most recently, we have been competing again in the 'Sum Dog' competition. Amazingly, we are in the lead (Top Dogs!). Thank you for everyone logging on and pushing us to the top! In English, we finished writing our diaries around the 'Matchbox Diary' where Year 4 imagined themselves as the 'Little Girl' in the story.
The children have been gripped this week and we have started our final writing unit of the term. Year 4 have been looking at 'The Matchbox Diary' by Paul Fleishmann and are planning to write their own diary account as if they were a little girl.
We have continued to complete our pencil case designs in DT and this has worked well, the children have shown endeavour, rigour and resilience whilst doing this.
I was so impressed with Year 4's singing during our performance at the church. We may not be good in formation but we sure can sing!
Keep going with the reading at home -Year 3 are still beating us on the 'Grand Champion Chart'
Thanks Mr Bastow and Mrs McCabe.
29.11.21
Year 4 have been working hard in our most recent topic of 'Advent' where we have been learning hymns, writing scripture and talking about why 'Advent' is celebrated. In Science, Year 4 have looked at how states can change from a liquid in to a solid. In particular, we explored a frozen waterfall as part of our hook in to the lesson.
In PE, children have been working with Rob the gymnastics coach and tried to add in a forward roll into our routine. Design and Technology has led us down the path of starting to stitch, once we were past the stage of 'threading the eye of the needle' we attempted some 'in and out' stitching as well as a 'whipping stitch'. If parents could practice at home with children that would HELP us a lot during our lessons. :)
This week has been the start of our Advent. We were able to take part in our 'Advent Liturgy' where we all sat in a spiral, sang hymns and took part in our collective worship. In RE we were able to complete our spiritual art. The children added scripture and created a hill scene with the night stars shining.
Thank you to the parent helpers who helped take the children down to the church where we were able to practice our hymns for the service.
Mr Bastow and Mrs McCabe.
18.11.21
There has been a lot of activities happening in school this week and Year 4 have been really enjoying their learning! We have been learning all about 'Anti-Bullying' which has been a focus this week. The children were able to write anonymously about a child in the class, writing kind words, that they could take home. We have been raising money for 'Children in Need' and thank you to everyone that donated. This has involved Year 4 learning an Arabic dance and it is clear that Mr Bastow has two left feet!
In PE we have completed our dance routine including balancing, jumps and pivots. Rob, our coach, was very impressed with the endeavour the children have shown.
In Geography we have been using an atlas to locate famous mountains all around the globe!
Overall, an amazing week and I hope all the children have a well rested weekend!
Wow we are flying through these weeks! Year 4 have been very busy this week! Our Big write has been fantastic! The children have been gripped by our persuasive writing piece on Scafell Pike. The children have been working hard to convince others to come and climb the mountain, some even offered free parking for a year in the Lake District. This would certainly save some pennies. In our Maths we have been working hard on our multiplications, problem solving skills and explaining abstract mathematical concepts.
PE has been fantastic in allowing the children the opportunity to dribble, shoot, catch and pass. Our main target is to get comfortable with the movements in basketball and communicate as a team.
Computing has been a success and has allowed us to tie in our topic in PE to creating an animation project all about basketball.
Thanks for the great reading at home!
Mr Bastow and Mrs McCabe.
04.11.21
It has been a great week for the Year 4's this week. From our PE lesson we worked on our gymnastic balancing, jumping and completed a routine!
In Science we were able to investigate ‘States of Matter’ which is our new topic. We looked at states such as ‘gases’, ‘liquids’ and ‘solids’. Computing lead us down the route of animation which has been linked to our topic in PE which is basketball. Lots of the children have shown myself how to add features so we have both been learning!
An active week for us this week! A special thanks to the parent helpers on Mass and to you all for the fantastic effort with reading and 4-a-day!
Everyone made it to the last week! I'm sure everyone is ready for a break. The children have been fantastic this term and it has been great getting to know them.
This week has been fantastic, in English year 4 completed their instructional writing on how to make Felix Felicis. This was linked to our class book Harry Potter. In History we have been studying 'Black History' where we researched and learned why Nelson Mandela was so significant in supporting black lives.
It has also been our 'MADD WEEK' which has been a rewarding experience for all and allowed the children to get creative. We have been focusing on ' Gustav Klimt' a landscape artist. The children have explored patterns, Gustav's work, colour wheels, bees and sunflowers. Year 4 have really engaged in this and they have taken pride in their work!
Mr Bastow and Mrs McCabe
11.10.21
Well! What a week it has been for year 4!
We started this week off by going to Segedunum Roman Fort, thank you to all the parents who were involved and put their name forward to be a volunteer. From the day the children learned how houses were built, the methods the romans used to build and live and how they defended their forts. It was a great day and the children engaged fantastically! I was really impressed!
In English children have finished off their big write for Alice in Wonderland, focussing on their alternative endings. In Maths we have been regularly taking part in our 'Maths Meetings' where children discuss Maths in a practical way! All children have engaged and really enjoyed this. I have learned a lot from the children myself.
A great week again and the children need to keep showing resilience in everything they do.
This week the children have really wowed with their sense of enthusiasm and competitiveness. During PE with our coach Rob we have been learning about the functional movements (Like hopping, skipping and jumping). We have been playing bench ball and other team games.
We have also been taking part in our 'Commando Joe's' day. This has been really well received from the children and we have had a great day! Year 4 will have to not get used to calling me 'staff'. We focused on the explorer 'Levison Wood' and tried to deliver water over a ravine in our mission. The children also worked together in building a waterproof den. Some groups got wetter than others.
In math's we have also celebrated multiplication day where the children were able to go head to head in a battle of the best. In English we have been finishing off our alternative event in Alice in Wonderland.
We look forward to our trip next week ready to learn more about the Romans!
Have a lovely rest of the week,
Mr Bastow and Mrs McCabe.
Year 4 getting competitive in maths!
1/4
Navigating at night using a pacing strategy.
2/4
Our class private collecting the most important resource.
Week 4! As the weather has turned, the learning has not stopped! It has been a great week in school! We have started our new genre of, 'Literary Heritage'. Looking at Alice in Wonderland and wanting to write out alternative ending. In Maths, at times, we have worked practically. Most recently, we used lollipop sticks to represent Roman numerals, which the children really engaged with.
As part of our Humanities, we have focused on why Romans invaded Britain. 'Living Things and their Habitats' has encapsulated children's attention as we have been grouping them. In RE we have continued our 'Family' topic where the children have written scripture and completed spiritual art.
To the end of last week we had a great afternoon at the Macmillan afternoon. Thank you for your donations, this went a long way! We raised £172.84! It was also a special week in school as the children have been able to get democratic and vote for their 'House Captain'.
We hope that next week is as successful as this one and hopefully the weather gets better!
Wow! We are on the third week already! This week the children have impressed me with their enthusiasm and giving 110% across all lessons. This needs to continue and carry on in to next week.
In Maths this week the children have been using their knowledge with the value of a digit to help them solve problems. They have compared numbers using pictorial resources and used their problem and reasoning skills to attempt stronger challenges. In English, we have finished our big write on ‘Dragonology’, which has been a great topic and there has been some wonderful vocabulary.
RE has allowed us to look deeper in to the ‘Story of Abraham’ and children have been reflecting how this is similar to their lives. There has been some fantastic discussions as well as, looking through scripture. We have continued out topic of ‘The Romans’ where we have delved deeper into why the Romans invaded Britain.
As a class we have continued to work on our teamwork skills in PE. Children have used ‘Trust’ where we have used blindfolds and completed more challenging obstacle courses. Year 4 have really impressed in their Art as we continue to look at ‘Picasso’ and we have had a go at recreating his work.
Let's see if we can have everyone in next week!
Mr Bastow and Mrs McCabe
13.9.21
This week children have been engaging with many activities in school! We have had a successful week in maths learning about estimation and the value of our numbers. Some members in the class were very excited that we were estimating with marshmallows (unfortunately for them they stayed in the packet). In our writing we have been exploring ‘Dragonology’ and what it takes to be a Dragonologist. We have been reading Phillip Pullman’s ‘The Firework Makers Daughter’ which has captured the children’s attention.
During RE we have been continuing our work on People and have created family trees. Humanities has taken us down the path of The Romans. The children have created colour maps to illustrate the Roman Empire. During science, we explored ‘living things’ which the children have a great knowledge about!
Picasso has been the name on everyone’s lips this week as we have been learning about his life and work. The children are preparing themselves for creative ways to magpie his work.
Year 4 need to keep up their fantastic attitude to learning and keep pushing themselves in everything they do!
Mr Bastow and Mrs McCabe.
6.9.21
It has been fantastic to get to know all of the children and welcome them back to school. We have had a great first week and the children have impressed me with their effort and enthusiasm towards their learning.
We have started our ‘People’ topic in R.E and the children have enjoyed learning about ‘The family of God in scripture’. In RHE the children have discussed their feelings towards themselves their body and health.
Year 4 have really engaged in their learning about the Romans and a lot of children have brilliant previous knowledge about this. In English, the children have written their very own Kenning poems. We have enjoyed playing Handball and working on our team skills in P.E.
Have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday for another week of great learning!
30.07.22
We just completed Sports Day! Yellow were the victors however all teams loved participating. Year 4 competed in different events and tried to earn points for their team. There was a parents relay race and we were so happy that everyone decided to have a go!
There was no competition (unfortunately) in the teachers race. But obviously Mr Bastow won the race. He was like a young Usain Bolt, a powerful cheetah and a Lamborghini pulling on to the motorway. The cream always rises to the top!
Well done Year 4 for their efforts and a applause for Mr Bastow's celebration.
Oh yes, thanks to the Parent too!
Mr Bastow and Year 4 (Puns written by Year 4 not me.)
